In the trailer for “Nina”, Zoe Saldana portrays the famous jazz singer Nina Simone, and has created outraged because people feel Zoe Saldana isn’t black enough for the role.
I understand how people feel with all these actresses who seemingly fit the colored wheel for the role why did Zoe get the part? Well only the director and those who are in charge of casting the roles in the movie can answer that question. But it is obvious that maybe just maybe Zoe Saldana did her job as an actor and brought life to the role of Nina who just so happens to be several shades darker than her.
While I understand the outrage, I don’t condone a woman of color being called out her name because she isn’t black enough in pigment. Last time I checked COLORED PEOPLE, which Zoe is, are struggling for roles in Hollywood… The argument that there are better people to play the role raises only one question for me, Why do you assume that she didn’t read for the part and killed it? Lets check our feelings and stop bringing a Woman of Dominican descent down.
Let me remind you Dominicans aren’t white either, remember good ole Columbus came in like a wrecking ball and conquered the Tainos (giving you a short history lesson) raping their women because their boats were full of men remember? After rape and disease riddled the pure blood Tainos, and slaves from Africa were brought in and also raped you are left with the present day makeup of Dominican Republic as well as many of the Caribbean Islands a rainbow of beautiful brown people.
Back to the matter at hand is Zoe Saldana black enough? The color of her skin or anyone for that matter should stop being an object of debate. Everyone should have equal opportunity to audition for roles, diversity is of course needed in the areas of power and funding which an ongoing issue in itself. Stay woke guys we have more pressing issues at hand women still make less than men doing the same jobs. Black and Hispanic men still make up the majority of the population in prisons, lets take up those crosses to bare and leave Zoe alone. Now if she sucks at the role we can talk than but otherwise judge her not by the pigment of her skin but the talent with which she brings What do you think leave a comment below.
